CH2M HILL Canada Limited

CH2M HILL Canada Limited, one of Canada’s largest environmental engineering firms, offers a complete range of environmental services and proven-technologies to its clients throughout Canada and internationally. The Canadian-controlled private corporation, along with the CH2M HILL family of companies, has delivered progressive, environmentally conscious and cost-effective environmental management solutions to government, industrial, private, and international clients for more than 80 years. The company has embraced the principles of sustainable development, which benefit our economic and social worlds while respecting and enhancing surrounding natural environments. The firm is a recognized leader in the environmental field. It has been honoured on several occasions with the Schreyer Award, the highest recognition for engineering excellence in Canada, and most recently, the 2000 Environmental Award, presented by The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia.

CH2M HILL Canada Limited is an amalgamation of CH2M HILL Engineering Canada Limited and Gore & Storrie Limited. William Gore and William Storrie, both civil engineers, formed the company with Dr. George Nasmith, a bacteriologist and health specialist, in 1919. Together, the three men pioneered many innovative projects, resulting in a firm that specializes in municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment, water supply, water resources, systems analysis modelling, process control, air pollution control, hazardous and solid waste management, energy management, and environmental planning and remediation services. Under the new name and affiliation with the CH2M HILL family of companies, the company's service capabilities have grown exponentially.

CH2M HILL has designed and upgraded facilities that supply approximately 15% of the drinking water and treat roughly 25% of the wastewater across Canada. Many landmarks demonstrate the company's historical innovative process and design capabilities:

  • First application of activated sludge technology (1927) at the North Toronto Wastewater Treatment Plant, now used by practically all Canadian facilities
  • Design and construction supervision for the Calgary Glenmore Dam reservoir, and water treatment facilities (1930)
  • Design of a Torpey-assisted step-feed plant (1956) for the Edmonton Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant, reducing plant size and cost
  • Use of high purity oxygen (UNOX) for biological treatment (1984) at the Barrie Water Pollution Control Centre, reducing air emissions
  • 1986 Schreyer Award for anaerobic process development at the Lakeview Wastewater Treatment Plant, reducing use of fossil fuel
  • Expansion and modernization program at Ottawa-Carleton Robert O. Pickard Environmental Centre (1996). The changes saw a threefold increase in plant capacity, implementation of odourless secondary treatment, and cogeneration, providing energy savings of $60,000 per month.
  • 2000 Environmental Award for "Stoney Creek Integrated Stormwater Management Strategy and Plan" for Burnaby, B.C., designed to put world-class environmental concepts into practical use for residential and commercial development.

CH2M HILL appreciates the value of the natural environment and considers the environment a priority in all its corporate and business activities. This is reflected in the firm’s ongoing development and implementation of environmentally restorative and pollution-preventative engineering solutions. CH2M HILL’s team of engineers, planners, architects, hydrogeologists, scientists, and technical specialists is committed to lead in the pursuit of a sustainable future for Canada and the world.
